fenrisians-sweatshop So I was a very young boy when these incidents happened, but I do remember them very clearly and perhaps my fascination with the occult (not so great when your family is catholic) began. This album just instantly bought me back 40 odd years or so. And I’m a small boy, wide eyed in morbidly fascinated horror as my parents yammer on about demons and satan worshippers. I can’t pick a stand out yet but suffice to say, since I discovered The Night Monitor each of the albums I have (4) are awesome.

Michael J Bates Having been to Clapham, in the mid 80's with friends, because of the 'Unexplained' article I had to buy this.
There was a pit in the middle of the woods, a creepy vicar and a very sinister feel to the place.
I might go back there soon to see how it's changed. Favorite track: Hecate, Goddess of the Underworld.

about

'Their Dark Dominion' charts the haunted history of Clapham Wood in Sussex, a paranormal hotspot linked with tales of UFO sightings, mysterious disappearances, unexplained deaths, and dark worship.

In 1978, local investigator Charles Walker was contacted by a black magic initiate who claimed that the woods were being used for dark rituals and animal sacrifice by The Friends of Hecate - a secretive occult group whose number were said to include those at the highest levels in society.

“We will stop at nothing to ensure the safety of our cult!”

The soundtrack to an imaginary documentary or TV series circa 1987 - the year in which the area’s ‘demonic connection’ was severed by the great October storm - ‘Their Dark Dominion’ conjures digital synthscapes and swirling gothic guitar to invoke an ethereal atmosphere of supernatural menace.

"Why not liven up a dull day by listening to this record evoking a series of demonic rituals, committed by clandestine elites in the middle of a Sussex forest? ... Their Dark Dominion focuses on the ambiguity between the supernatural and the psychological, bringing it closer to a Dick DeBenedictis score for Columbo than a traditional horror soundtrack. It’s refreshing – tracks such as “Invocation” and “Path To Enchantment” are vaporous and ethereal where others might choose shrill hysterics. There are hints of John Carpenter and John Harrison, but Scrivin guides us through the tropes without ever stepping on them." Spenser Tomson - The Wire

"1970s Satanism, anyone? The Friends of Hecate performing unspeakable woodland rituals in Sussex? I thought as much. Neil Scrivin, recording as The Night Monitor, evokes these reputedly real tales of hirsute heathenism on Their Dark Dominion, a thunderous album of Paddy Kingsland-style synth workouts ... It's best listened to with the lights on..." Bob Fischer - Fortean Times

"As ever, the back story provides the ideal inspiration for Scrivin’s unique brand of electronic composition. Pads float up from the ground like fog, melodies present themselves with unresolved open-endedness, leaving more questions than answers, and the whole thing feels like its drenched with sinister inquisitiveness. ‘The Pit And The Pentagram’ stands out for its creepy hook and choir textures, while the title track hitches a chilling synth riff to a strident drum pattern bespeaking ominous foreboding. No one does brooding electronic music quite like Scrivin, and this is undoubtedly one of his best releases to date." Mat Smith - furtherdot.com

"Just another day in 1970s Sussex, where a satanic cult called The Friends Of Hecate have taken up residence in Clapham Wood, conducting appalling rituals within spitting distance of the A280. Staggeringly, these allegations were once made in earnest, and this album by Blackpool's Neil Scrivin is the bombastic soundtrack to an imaginary 1987 ITV documentary. 'Under The Greenwood Tree' sounds like Paddy Kingsland produced by Trevor Horn, and 'Hecate, Goddess Of The Underworld' is the most mystical synth exploration of British woodland since Clannad first set foot in Sherwood Forest." Bob Fischer - Electronic Sound

"For this album, The Night Monitor utilises the concept of creating an imaginary soundtrack for a horror film. Sometimes this idea can feel gimmicky or fall a bit flat, but on ‘Their Dark Dominion’ it is used successfully and to full effect, achieving dramatic impact through a vast landscape of swirling synths gliding across authentic-sounding 80s industrial beats. It’s a delight for fans of classic industrial and EBM sounds, with an added supernatural tinge." Bleep.com
